Travel advice about budgeting is important when planning a vacation cruise. 

Failure to do a simple estimated travel budget is one of the primary reasons for ruined vacations. 

There will be many things for you to consider when planning your cruise however, of primary concern for most travelers is "how much to will my cruise cost"?

No matter what your financial status is, budgeting for your cruise is important to make sure that you have adequately considered all the possible expenses that you may incur on your trip.

Destination

Obviously, nothing will affect your cruise expense more than your destination.  Therefore, you may want to pre-determine some alternative destinations so that you can find a cruise that fits within your budget.  Keep in mind that not all cruise lines service idential ports and therefore, altering your vacation destination could have a major impact on your budget.

Additionally, even if more than one cruise line visits the same ports, they may each have different price packages due to the availablility of onboard accommodations (i.e. luxury vs economy rates). Check with several different cruise lines to make sure that they can accommodate your vacation destinations within your budget. 

You will be well advised to consider if you want to travel in the company of predominately adults, mixed adults and young people, or primarily all young people.  Your peace of mind is at stake in making this decision, especially for the elderly if you are bothered by young children.

During your due diligence process, check to see if the cruise line has any special travel incentives during the time that you plan to travel. Most cruise lines offer all inclusive vacation packages and special seasonal incentives especially during “off season” travel times.

You need to be aware that all inclusive vacations may seem over priced, however, keep in mind that you will most likely actually be saving money because you will generally get a sizable price reduction by bundling your required services over what it would cost you if purchased individually when you arrive on board. 

Additionally, the all inclusive vacations, generally “pre-register” you on special shore activities.  Often time, if you try to register for some special outing when you arrive, they may be sold out leaving you limited to on board activities.  As a caution however, make sure that you are fully aware of what special shore activities that your travel package includes so you won’t have any hidden expense surprises when you arrive.

Departure and Arrival Dates

Again, seasonal travel is generally less costly than traveling during normal tourist seasons. So planning your vacation during off season could save you hundreds of dollars. You will need to determine the specific dates when your cruise ship departs and returns and also from which ports.  This is important because it will affect your travel expenses getting to and back home from your ship. 

For example, you may need to make special air travel and hotel accommodations if they are not included in your cruise package.  If possible, you should try to book your departure and return from a port close to home to minimize these expenses.  Don’t forget the parking expense for your vehicle at the airport parking lots while you are traveling. Cruise tips include the fact that some hotels near airports will allow you to leave your vehicle at their parking lots free if you stay overnight at their facility prior to your cruise. Generally, you will find that most of the on board activities are included in the cruise line travel package.  However, you need to be aware that some cruise lines may charge to watch movies, attend special shows, and/or for you to participate some special onboard activities such as, rock climbing, onboard surfing, and lessons on gambling, dancing and swimming as examples.

Miscellaneous Additional Expenses

Some additional travel expenses that you may need to budget for include:

• child care on board and also at your destination once you arrive if you are planning to attend any special adult only affairs
• vehicle expenses at your destination (i.e. rental car, taxis and etc.)
• estimated cost of souvenirs,
• and other related incidental expenses along these lines.

Please keep in mind that depending upon your special travel situation and plans, there may be other expenses that you will incur during your vacation cruise.

Through experience, James Gray has learned that what you pack for your cruise attire depends on several factors such as:

•  Your destination and how you are being routed,
•  Special clothing for flight, auto, and special travel accommodations,
•  Activities you plan to be involved in during your trip,

•  Meetings you will be attending in route for personal or business,
•  Special lunches and meals,
•  Formal ship crew occasions and etc.

All of the above criteria plus many others will dictate what you will need so you will want to make certain that you pack the correct type of cruise cloths. All of the above activities can be broken down into four basic types of clothing requirements: Casual, Simi-Dressy, Formal and Activity Related.

Shoes

During your cruise you will be doing a tremendous amount of walking and you should not forget the importance of taking along shoes that fit the occasion but that are also comfortable and supportive for your feet.  Your feet will thank you and you will have a much more enjoyable vacation as a result. 

Casual

If you plan to fly or drive to meet your ship, then you will no doubt want something reasonably light and casual depending upon the weather conditions when you begin your travel. 

Obviously, spring and summer travel will dictate lighter clothing then will be needed during fall and winter.  You will also need to keep in mind that the type of clothing and the amount taken will affect the amount of luggage that you will need to pack and cart around.  Generally, limiting yourself to one or two sets of carry on clothing prior to boarding your cruise ship should be adequate because once on board, the ships pre-set climate will determine what you need to be comfortable. 

Once on board and when you arrive at your destination you will also need to consider any special activities that you plan to participate in and dress accordingly for those occasions. (i.e. dancing, special functions, shows, swimming, hiking, boating, and etc) 

Simi-Dressy

Prior to boarding your cruise ship, if you are attending any special functions such as meetings or evening shows, then you will want to have something a little more dressy and appropriate for those occasions.  

During your cruise, you will be seated for special dining events and most cruise lines have a specific cruise dress code that they expect to be followed during certain meals.  For example, during normal dinner meals in the main dining rooms, you will be expected to wear something dressy. 

Generally, shorts and jeans may not be appropriate or allowed depending upon the cruise line rules.  A tip on what to wear during these travel occasions would be for you to wear the same type of clothing as you during a normal business meeting.

Formal

Nearly all cruise lines sponsor at least one formal dining night and often have a special "Captain’s Dinner".  During these social events you will be expected to dress in more formal attire closer to tuxedo style dress styles. Activity Related

You will definately want to consider clothing that you will need for any special activities that you plan to be involved in, such as swimming, hiking, boating and etc.

Travel Advice – Cruise Tips From A Seasoned Traveler

If you are cruising for the first time congratulations! You are about to experience a unique, worthwhile vacation experience.

As a newbie, though, you probably have questions about some of the dos and don’ts of traveling aboard a cruise ship. Luckily, there are many die-hard cruisers like James Gray who are happy to share some tips to make your first time cruise more rewarding.

Things You Should Do Before You Leave Home  When Planning a Cruise Vacation

Home Security Issues:

It is wise to notify the local Police Department and Fire Department of you absence and give them the contact information of the person who is monitoring your home while you are away.

Arrange to have a friend or neighbor monitor your home to take in your mail and newspapers daily or better yet, put both on delayed delivery until you return. Accumulating mail at your home is a big red sign to thieves and other troublemakers that no one is home. Simply contact the Post Office and your newspaper company to hold your services until you return.  You will also receive a small reward by not having to pay for the newspaper while you are gone. Another money saver is to have your garbage service discontinued while you are away.

Set out several lights in you home in rooms that are normally lit at nights when you are home. Set them on timers so that they go on and off at the normal times that you would have lights on when you are home. This will make it appear that someone is home and will help to deter break-in problems. Alert your neighborhood communities patrol coordinator so that they might keep an eye on your property while you are away.

Turn your hot water heater(s) off at the circuit breaker to save electricity.  You might even want to shut off your water to your house at the meter to prevent unnecessary damage in case of broken water lines while you are gone. And if you leave in the winter, don’t forget to freeze protect your outside water lines and crawl spaces.

Arrange to have a neighbor or Landscape Company mow your yard if you plan to be away for long periods.  This will also help to keep the property in “lived in” condition.

Money Matters:

Carry traveler’s checks in lieu of a lot of cash because if lost or stolen, they are replaceable. To expedite the replacements should your traveler’s checks be lost or stolen, write down the serial numbers and put them in a safe and separate place.  A good example is to split the travelers checks in half and give your spouse half and you the other half and then give the opposite spouse the travel check numbers for the opposite spouses checks.  That will provide you another layer of security in case one or the other spouse looses their checks for what-ever reason.  This will make it easier for both you and your bank to speed up the recovery/replacement process.

It is also wise to keep a supply of small denominational bills, usually one’s and five’s with you for tipping purposes. Tipping is appreciated for porters and stewards at both the airport and docking pier of the ship. This is especially important in foreign countries. Horror stories abound about stolen or lost bags that never make it to the ship. And it is not uncommon for the bags to be misplaced purposely by someone who was refused a tip. It’s a small price to pay for having your clothing and toiletries aboard for your cruise.

To avoid having to stand in long lines at the end of your cruise trying to get any billing errors corrected, check out your ending balance on you invoice as soon as you get it which is generally on the night before you dock at the end of your cruise. Check for any errors and resolve them as soon as possible. There is no sense adding the stress of standing in line to pay your final tab after you just had a relaxing vacation.

You may want to consider using a few rubber bands wrapped around your wallet. The rubber will make it more difficult to get your wallet out of your pocket and will also make it very difficult for a pickpocket to part with your wallet without you feeling it. 

BAGGAGE:

Check with the travel venders to make sure you know how much luggage each person in your party is allowed.  It should be well packed and before closing it, place a 3” x 5” bright colored card or something similar with you home contact information on it in case the luggage gets lost. Also, make sure to strap your luggage closed in addition to the normal latching devices.  In some cases, you will not be allowed to lock the luggage, so check first.  If an inspector has to get into it and you are not there with a key, in most cases they will break the lock.

It is also a great idea to place some type of bright colored identification materials on the outside of your luggage.  For example, bright orange, green or red plastic tags to make them visible from 50 – 60 feet away.  Your luggage will often be off loaded into a large holding area with hundreds of other luggage pieces.  Without your baggage being highly identifiable, you could be in for a frustrating experience trying to find yours in a sea of luggage and amongst other frustrated travelers.

Obviously, it should go without saying, but as a reminder, you should always expect the unexpected in regards to the weather, no matter where you are cruising to.  It is wise to pack a few extra warmer clothes just in case.  If packing is limited, you may wind up having to purchase extra clothing when you arrive.  This also brings up another important consideration.  People always bring home more than they left with, so you might want to pack a collapsible suitcase inside your other luggage to use to bring home your loot.    

Tips For Traveling With Kids

If you are traveling with babies or toddlers, paper throwaway bibs are perfect for protecting your child from stains and messes at meal times, thus prolonging the wear of their clothing.

You might want to consider bringing a collapsible stroller for your young child. The cruise ship is a highly active place and before long you will wind up having to carry them.  This is exhausting to parents due to all the different levels on the ship that you will want to visit and you will soon tire. A stroller can be a life saver in many cases such as this.

Pack a few portable, self contained snacks for your child like peanut butter or cheese crackers for use prior to boarding your cruise ship.  You won’t need to worry after boarding because on most cruises, all your meals will be furnished.  Even if you need between meal smacks, they are readily available onboard.

MISCELLANEOUS: 

Preprint labels and stamps if you plan to mail postcards out while you are on your cruise. This saves some time and you won’t have to lug around an awkward address book.

Take a flashlight with you in case you get an inside cabin. Darkness is not fun when you are in a strange room. With no light, it can be frustrating and dangerous in an unfamiliar setting.

When you board the ship, make sure you know the fire or emergency escape routes.  Emergencies in crowded spaces especially when stressed can be fatal.  Learn to protect yourself.  It is also wise to carry a whistle or other loud alerting device with you, especially for women and children in case they become targets of other passengers or even some untrustworthy cruise ship crew members.  

Bring a small first aid kit for those minor emergencies. Wet wipes are handy too for those instance were a sink isn’t handy. Normally you can get these items from the ships crew, but in case of an emergency, you may not be able to get someone in a timely manner.

A good exercise at home is to try to think of all of the different scenarios that you can run up against at home or when traveling on land and then apply that knowledge to traveling on a crowded cruise ship. Respect the Dress Code Guidelines

Cruise ships will often post some clothing guidelines for attendance at dinner or live entertainment functions. If you don’t follow the guidelines, you will not be thrown off the ship. However, you could be made to feel mighty uncomfortable wearing your Bermuda shorts and flip flops to a semi-formal dinner or dance.

Don’t be an obnoxious seat saver or line cutter.

It is a bit exasperating when planning your cruise activities and take the time to arrive at a decent hour to catch the next lounge act only to have a sea of coats draped over chairs and no bodies in the seats. And line cutters, shame on you. It is one thing for you to stand in line and have your spouse join you after a quick trip to the rest room. It is a whole new ballgame letting in your twenty new found friends from the poker tables cut in line.

Be respectful when using gym equipment/hot tub/lounge chairs/computers, and etc.

There are possibly several hundred other people onboard who are lined up behind you at some point that may want to use these privileges. Don’t hog the equipment and be mindful of others who are discreetly waiting without complaint for their turn. Try to diversify your cruise ship activities to have a more rounded experience.

Respect the designated smoking areas

There are specific areas just for smokers on board. Do not be selfish and light up at the dining room table while others are eating. Here’s a big clue: if you see ash trays, you can light up.

These unspoken rules sound perfectly logical don’t they? Yet, some cruisers forget themselves in their quest for a good time and other people suffer for it. If you are unsure of something, ask a member of the cruise ship staff.

To combat this you’ll want to make sure that you drink plenty of fluids such as water and juices as you. Alcohol can dehydrate the body so it should be avoided if you can.
